Enhancing Cardiovascular Health in Bone Marrow Transplant Patients
About CAREFit-BMT
The CAREFit-BMT Study is a pioneering research initiative aimed at improving cardiovascular fitness and overall health in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Funded by the University of Washington Institute of Translational Health Sciences (UW ITHS) KL2 Award, this study investigates the impact of a structured, home-based exercise prehabilitation program on transplant candidates at high risk for cardiovascular complications.
Patients preparing for HSCT face significant physical challenges, including a decline in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), increased cardiovascular risk, and reduced functional status. Emerging research suggests that exercise before transplant (prehabilitation) can improve fitness, reduce complications, and enhance recovery. CAREFit-BMT is designed to address these challenges through a scientifically guided, technology-supported intervention.
How CAREFit-BMT Works
The CAREFit-BMT program is an 8-week, home-based exercise regimen tailored to each participant’s fitness level and medical condition. It integrates moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (such as walking, cycling, or stair climbing) and resistance training to enhance strength, endurance, and cardiovascular resilience. This study aims to bridge the gap between exercise science and clinical practice, providing transplant candidates with a safe and accessible way to optimize their health before HSCT.
Why It Matters
Cardiovascular complications are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in HSCT survivors, particularly among older adults and those with pre-existing heart conditions. CAREFit-BMT seeks to change that by:
- Reducing cardiovascular risk before transplant through structured exercise
- Enhancing post-transplant recovery by improving physical resilience
- Using cutting-edge wearable technology to personalize and track progress
- Laying the groundwork for larger clinical trials to shape future survivorship care
By integrating scientifically validated exercise strategies with real-time digital health tracking, CAREFit-BMT is transforming how we support cancer survivors undergoing HSCT.
